My final product meets the client brief as the sports
magazine is for the local area and discusses a problem that is occurring. I created
my front cover in Photoshop. This was a great tool to use as it had all the
features I needed to use to create my final product. I was able to easily edit
the photo to achieve the black and white with the spot colour for the boxing
gloves and was also able to create all of the text and logos for the cover. I
then created my double page spread in adobe in design. This software was great
to use as it is very professional and also had all of the right features to use
like giving me columns to write in. both final pieces have been saved in a JPEG
format this is beneficial as I will be able to upload this file online as well
as printing it. As my proposal stated that I also wanted to distribute my magazine
online.

Survey
i had created a survey and had sent it to a large group of people and told them it was about a new boxing magazine. as you can see 100% of people who had taken the survey are male. this has shown me that there are more males interested in this subject than females.
only 60% of the people would read a boxing magazine.
all of my audience live in the maghull area. this is what i want as my magazine will be based locally.
M4 - front cover and double page spread
the finished magazine will be uploaded online as a JPEG file and will also be printed and distributed in local shops. the JPEG file is used for online and electronic distribution as it is saves the image and is still a good size and will be easy to see and read.
P4 - Double page spread interview
Original interview
Tell
me a little bit about yourself?
My name is Jay Griff, I am 18 years old and
live in the maghull area. I currently attend deyes Sixth form.
How
old were you when you started boxing?
I first started boxing at aged 15 which is
a difficult age to start boxing as most people start around aged 9.
Has
boxing helped you in any way?
Boxing has helped me in many ways. It is a
great stress relief, especially with college. It has also kept me fit and
healthy which I can’t complain about. Boxing is a much disciplined sport and it
has taught me a lot of respect which I didn’t have originally. Growing up I
always got into trouble and mixed with people I shouldn’t. I believe the
southpaw boxing gym has kept me out of trouble and has raised me to be who I am
today. I would even go as far to say “boxing saved me!”
What
is the boxing Gym doing for the local community?
The southpaw boxing gym is doing a lot for
the community. It isn’t just getting youths out of trouble but its holding free
classes for over 50s to keep the elderly in shape and healthy. They also hold
fundraising events to spend money on cleaning the town of litter and graffiti.
Would
you recommend boxing to others?
I think that people should try out boxing.
It keeps you focused and can teach you a lot. You learn something new every day
and is a great way to meet new people.
Finished
“My name is Jay Griff, I am
18 years old and live in the maghull area. I currently attend deyes Sixth form.”
Jay Griff is an 18-year-old aspiring boxer
from Maghull. His life currently consists of his boozing training whilst
attending school frequently at Deyes Sixth form. Jay started to participate in
local boxing classes at the Southpaw gym in Maghull. He first started at the
age of 15 which he says is “a difficult age to start boxing as most
people start around aged 9.”
“Boxing has helped me in many ways.” Jay thinks of boxing as a really good and effective way to relieve
stress. Which really helps with his school life. “it has also kept me fit and
healthy, which I can’t complain about.”
Jay also reveals that boxing is a very
disciplined sport and has taught him a lot of respect that he didn’t posses
growing up. He believes that the southpaw boxing gym has created who he is
today and would even comment “boxing saved me!”
It appears that the boxing gym isn’t just
picking troubled teens of the local streets. It is also throwing them back out them
to make a difference. The gym holds many fundraisers that are open to all. This
money is being used on cleaning the town of litter and graffiti. It also helps
run an over 50s class which is free to all over 50’s as the owner and students
believe everyone should be able to do their sport.
“I think that people should try boxing.” The sport keeps you focused and can benefit you with a lot of knowledge
and skill that you didn’t have before. Throughout the time that Jay has
attended he says he learns something new every single day and has made a great number
of new friends.
M2 – Legal and Ethical Issues
M2 – Legal and Ethical Issues
Legal
To ensure that I stay within the legal requirements I will
be creating all of my content myself. This will stop me from breaking any laws
like copyright as I have the rights to my own images and are free to use them
how I want to and when I want to. This will help me avoid facing criminal charges
like fines or imprisonment.
Ethical
I must make that I have permissions for my images and
interviews. The people who I am interviewing, and photographing must agree so
that I can use their face or text on my magazine. I must be careful taking my
images so that no one else is present in the shot. If someone accidentally gets
in the images I must ask if it is okay if they are used. If they do not agree I
will have to take my photos again. I will not be creating a location form as the location will be in my houses. I therefore do not need permissions to use the property.
risk assessment -
floors may be wet and may need a sign.
wires must be covers so that people do not fall over them.
If photo model has any medical conditions we must have a paramedic at the scene.
P3 - SWOT analysis
P3 – Swot analysis
Strength
I think that a strength to my magazine will be how it is a
good form for the local community to get involved with a sport. This will also
inform the local area on fund raisers that they will be starting. This will
mainly be aimed towards men as the gender demographic for my magazine consists
of males. Another strength will be that my magazine will be easy to create as
it is only going to showcase an interview, boxing tips and news which will be
presented with mainly images and bullet points.
Weakness
A weakness to the magazine is that the demographic for women
will not be as interested in the magazine as it is a male dominated sport and
therefore may not buy my product. Another weakness is that I will have to book
someone for a photoshoot which is very time consuming and may have to be held
over a period of time to make sure the images are perfect.
Opportunities
An opportunity to making my magazine is that I will be able
to research boxing photography, so I can learn what makes a good boxing
portrait photo.
Target
The target is to make a boxing magazine for a local gym and training
center and to showcase what they do to help the local community as the client brief
has instructed. I would like for my magazine to be dark in colour with spotted colours
like red throughout so that it can draw attention as it is different.

Production photographs of boxer: shooting from 3:30-4
Weather: the weather will not affect the photoshoot as the
shoot will be taken indoors and will use natural lighting from the window.
M1 - Marketing and Distribution
M1 – Marketing and Distribution
Plan – To distribute my product will be focusing on selling
my magazine in local stores around the area. Another big part of my
distribution will be online. My area is very small and will not get a lot of
exposure to other people in Liverpool. This website will ensure that all people
who could travel to Maghull get a chance to see the magazine and learn about
the gym. This will help me reach a larger target audience. I will also have
social media accounts to promote my product. This is effective as my audience
are teenager and young adults. This age category will spend most of their time
on social media meaning that they will always be informed of what’s new. my magazine is more targeted towards males however there are still females that are interested in boxing.
Marketing –
For the pre-release of the magazine we can use offers on our
magazine. This will give people a chance to pre order the magazine for a
cheaper price.
During release –
During the release of the magazine podcasts can be held for
the magazine where they talk live about the boxing news and the gym itself. This
will get better involved even once sales start to drop. This is also an
alternative way to create an income.
Post release –
After the magazine has been launched I will use social media
so that the readers are still updated with boxing news and upcoming release
dates for magazines. There will also be teasers of who is interviewed and what will
be included in the next issue.

P2 - Create sample materials to support the porposal
Sample Photographs
These images are all unedited. I will be picking two images, one for the front cover and one for my double page spread. I have had to create a permission form so that I can use the images in my magazine. I did not have to have permission for the facility used as the images where taken in my house.
Mood Board
P2 – Mood board annotations
My mood board contains eight front covers from existing boxing magazines. These magazines are aimed at boxing enthusiasts. Each front cover contains images and text to appeal to the target audience. A common feature of all the magazine covers is the mast head text which includes the word “boxing.” This makes it clear to the reader what the magazine content is about. A bold font style is used as it is impactful and is appropriate for the theme of boxing. The main Images on the magazines all show the boxer in training or in competition. The image of the boxers used in the magazine are all professional well known sportsman. The majority of shots used on these magazine covers are all mid shots. This is where the shot capture the waist up. The colour in the magazines have a lot of red, white, gold and black. The red is used as boxing is a brutal sport where there will be blood. The gloves also are usually coloured red as well as the ropes. The pull quotes used are using alliteration. E.g. “FINALLY FOR FLOYD?” and “Conor Benn brings father’s fire.” These are memorable phrases. The images of the boxers are shirtless and oiled, these images will have also been photo shopped and edited. This is used to glamourize the sport.
Double page spread annotations
this double page spread has an image on the left hand side of the person that the article is about. the article on the right hand side is written in columns which is a key convention in magazines. on this double page spread there is also a title "DAI HARD" and also subheadings which tells the reader a little bit about the article.
Front cover and DPS sketched designs
in comparison to boxing magazines my magazine sketch fits the expectations as there will be an image of a boxing in fighting position on the front cover. I also will be using a lot of the conventions of a magazine, for example, pull quote to draws in the reader, PUG, this shows what is included in the magazine. this is usually a free item and is used to catch the readers attention. the colours I plan to use for the front cover is black and white for the background and text as it is very simple and will have a bold eye catching effect as the contrast in colours work well together. the main image will be black and white however will still have spot colour as the boxing gloves will be coloured red. this will draw the attention to the gloves which will indicate that the sport is boxing. I want all of the other text on the front cover to stand out, this is because this text is used to show the reader what is in the magazine. for this I will be making the text red and gold. this is a typical colour to use for boxing magazines. I feel like this is because the red indicates blood and danger and the gold represents championship. I will also be using the same colour scheme for my double page spread.
This is my consent form. this form gives me permission to use the following persons information, images and interview that I had taken. this come under legal and ethical as if I didn't have the consent form it would be seen as unethical as I would not have permission to use the persons given information.
Proposal
Format: The format of my media
product will be a Magazine.
I am going to produce a new sports, boxing
magazine in the form of a Front Cover and Double Page Spread. This is going to
be s part of a larger promotional project for Southpaw magazine.
Working Title: My working title is ‘Southpaw’. This is part of the name of a local
boxing club that my magazine will be based around. For this title I
will use a bold white font and I will use a boxing glove to act as the letter ‘P’.
Genre: The sub-genre of my magazine is boxing. My target audience is going
to be aimed at males. This is because a statistic from boxing news magazine
states that 90% of their audience are male. I will also be aiming my magazine
to ages 13+. The demographic group that my magazine will fall into will be BC1C2.
Content:
My double page spread will have a main image and an interview
from a member of the local club. This interview will be about what the club has
done for the person and the community as this is going to be an article about
local issues. For my front cover it will have a main image of a boxer that will
be interviewed. And a bold Masthead to make the magazine visually noticeable.
Audience:
- 13+
- Male ( there will still be female readers)
- BC1C2
The audience of my magazine will be youths. This will be mainly aimed at men as boxing is a male dominated sport. However, anyone can read this magazine if it is in their interest.
My magazine will be released in local stores as it is a local magazine. I will also have an online version. Therefore I will have a link on my front cover so people can use the website.
